Are Mail Order Brides?
The
term mail order bride refers to a time when American pioneers ordered
European women to accompany them in the new land. They used the mail to
get in contact with these women. So the first mail order brides were
actually European!
Later it became synonym for women from Third World countries that
wanted to marry a Westerner. They did not marry these men for a better
life, but mainly to get a job in a rich country, and to send the hard
earned money to their relatives back home.
Back then it was possible that men wrote a woman and asked her to marry
him before they had ever met.
No wonder a lot of these marriages failed. They were not built on love,
and the cultural differences between husband and wife were often too
big.
What are mail order brides of the present time?
With the decline of the Soviet empire in the late eighties, Western men
got acquainted with a new type of mail order bride: well educated,
beautiful ladies that were only slightly exotic and that - for a
variety of reasons - could not find a husband in their home country.
Marriages
between Western men and Russian women have proven to be successful.
Love
plays a major part in these marriages, and the cultural differences
between Russians and Westerners can be overcome.
Women from the former USSR and Eastern Europe - we call them Russian,
to make things easy - are now the most popular mail order brides. Still
there are also men who search mail order brides from other parts of the
world, like Asia (Thailand, The Philippines, China) and Latin America
(Colombia, Brazil, Mexico).
Mail order brides is not a fair term to use, we must admit. It suggests
these women have no will, but are simply ordered through the mail, like
a book from Amazon. But most modern mail order brides know exactly what
they want. It's not far from truth to say that they are searching mail
order husbands.

are not ordered through the mail anymore.
Before
a man marries his mail order bride they will have corresponded for a
long time, and they will have met in person.

Simple. Because most people still use this term. We all know that mail
order brides are foreign women who want to meet a Western man. And
these women are the subject of this guide. Even when you won't find a
postman nowadays delivering a bride.
