With Love - How Russian Women See The West
Hollywood is not America, just like the Siberian
taiga is not Russia. How to deal with culture shock?
Russian media don't pay much attention to daily
life in Western Europe and America: there’s enough happening
in Russia itself.
A Russian woman’s image is therefore
often heavily influenced by what she sees in American movies and soap
series.
As
long as they haven't been in the West, many Russian women think Western
Europe, Canada and the States are always clean and full of beautiful
and wealthy people.
Reality is a bit different, as you know.
After a while Russian women find out that Western countries have their
dirty spots as well, that Western men often wear tasteless clothing and
that most are no gentlemen at all.
The overall
attitude in Western Europe and America is also colder than a Russian
lady might have expected before moving. Family ties aren't as tight as
in Russia and, on top of it all, it won't be easy for her to find a job
abroad similar to the one she had in Russia.
Your
Russian lady might face a heavy culture shock.
It's very likely that she will miss her family and
friends once she lives with you.
Have understanding for this, and help her to get
used to the new situation. Stimulate your Russian wife to learn your
native language. Help her to find a job or good education that might
improve her chances on the job market.
And let her call her Russian relatives as much as she wants. She will
be grateful.
Be aware that culture shock works both ways. Your
image of Russia might deviate from reality too.
You will also have to realize that a Russian woman may have different
values than you.
Don't
judge too quick when your Russian bride does or says something you
wouldn't.
If you want to have a successful relationship with
a Russian woman, you should respect cultural differences in the first
place.
